JOAN is a contemporary gallery in Amsterdam built around a simple belief: serious art does not have to feel distant. Art can be important without being intimidating, collectible without being predictable, and beautiful without needing an explanation before it can be enjoyed.

Our programme brings together established names and distinctive contemporary voices across painting, photography, sculpture, glass and collectible design. Post-war icons sit alongside a new generation of Japanese and international artists, while exceptional Dutch makers bring craft, material and experimentation into the conversation. What connects them is not a movement or a particular style. It is presence — work with a strong identity that catches your attention and gives you a reason to keep looking.

We are drawn to artists who have created a visual language of their own. From Andy Warhol, Yves Klein and Damien Hirst to Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Ayako Rokkaku and emerging contemporary voices, recognition alone is never enough. We look for work with personality, relevance and staying power.

Collecting at JOAN can start with an accessible edition or design object and extend to rare, museum-quality works by internationally significant artists. We deliberately bring these worlds together. Price is not what determines whether a work belongs at JOAN — character, quality and the strength of the idea do. A first-time collector can discover something exceptional alongside works that would feel equally at home in an important private or museum collection.

JOAN believes collecting should be enjoyable. You do not need to be an expert — or have a museum-sized budget — to begin.
