Mr Brainwash embraces the visual noise of contemporary culture rather than resisting it. The strongest works combine familiarity, optimism and hand-worked surfaces into objects with immediate presence.
Mr Brainwash is the working name of Thierry Guetta, a French-born, Los Angeles-based artist whose energetic works remix the imagery of Pop Art, street art, advertising and celebrity culture. His visual language is deliberately exuberant, accessible and saturated with references.
Born in France in 1966, Guetta moved to Los Angeles and initially became known through his obsessive documentation of street artists. His transition from filmmaker and observer to artist became a central narrative in Banksy’s 2010 film Exit Through the Gift Shop.
Mr Brainwash combines stencils, screenprinting, spray paint, collage and hand-painted interventions. Images of cultural icons are frequently layered with graffiti marks, slogans and optimistic phrases. Unique works often build on editioned or repeated motifs but are differentiated through extensive hand-finishing.
Since his first major Los Angeles exhibition in 2008, he has produced large exhibitions, public installations and commercial collaborations internationally. His position remains closely tied to the crossover between street art and popular culture, with a broad collector base attracted to the immediacy and recognisability of his imagery.
