Rokkaku brings together two qualities JOAN values strongly: immediate visual pleasure and unmistakable authorship. Even without a signature, the best works are recognisable through touch, colour and the peculiar emotional presence of her figures.
Ayako Rokkaku creates dreamlike paintings populated by wide-eyed figures, floating forms and energetic fields of colour. Working directly with her hands rather than conventional brushes, she builds images through touch, movement and improvisation.
Born in Chiba, Japan, in 1982, Rokkaku is largely self-taught. She began painting in the early 2000s and attracted attention through live-painting performances in which she worked rapidly on cardboard and other supports, often applying acrylic paint directly with her fingers and palms.
Her visual world combines childlike immediacy with sophisticated control of colour and rhythm. Figures appear to emerge from and dissolve back into painterly space, creating a tension between representation and abstraction. Although her imagery can appear playful, the strongest works possess a distinctive physical intensity generated by repeated layers, smears and gestures.
Rokkaku has exhibited internationally across Europe and Asia and has developed a substantial collector base. Her practice now includes paintings on canvas and cardboard, sculpture, ceramics and editions, while the tactile, hand-made quality of her image-making remains central to her identity.
